If you’re a rider, you’ll know that a horse needs very specific equipment. It’s a sport that demands rigor and professionalism. It’s sometimes difficult to understand the purpose of each accessory, such as the lead rope, bridle or harness. Find out what a horse lanyard is used for, as it’s an essential piece of riding equipment.
Riding: the horse transport lanyard
Among the various models of horse lanyards available on the equestrian equipment market, there are transport lanyards. Most lanyards in this category are quite short, with the possibility of adjusting the length in some cases. These are designed to secure your horse in a van or truck without allowing it to turn excessively in the vehicle. A rubber horse lanyard is also available, with snap hooks at each end.

Horse lanyards
Distinguished by its length of between 2 and 3 metres, the tie-back lanyard generally consists of a fairly fine braid covering the central core. They can also be made from a thick braid, as is the case with American lanyards. The material and braiding of the lanyards in this group ensure a particularly pleasant, comfortable feel.
The presentation lanyard for your horse
As the name suggests, this type of lanyard is used to move your horse during presentations. It’s the perfect accessory for veterinary checks and gaited competitions, for example. This type of lanyard usually has a handle. This makes it easier to hold your horse, especially when he’s a bit restless. For purely aesthetic reasons, most presentation lanyards are made of leather. What’s more, they end with 1 or 2 chains, to which one or two snap hooks can be attached, either to the bit rings or to the halter.
Panic lanyards for riding
Anti-panic lanyards are specially designed for horses that pull like foxes. Extremely useful for tying up, they ensure that the horse does not encounter any opposition when it decides to pull. Models in this family are generally made of rubber. It is also possible to buy a lanyard of this type with an anti-panic snap hook. This system systematically opens in the event of a strong pull on the lanyard. The horse is then free and safe from accidents, such as rolling over if the anti-panic lanyard breaks.
Turning working longe
Measuring between 7 and 10 m, the turning work rein is the longest model on the market. It plays an essential role in lunging a horse in a circle. This riding equipment ends in a handle. This makes it easier for the horse to hold when working at the end of the lunging rein. This type of lanyard is available in various models to meet your specific needs:
- the round lanyard,
- the flat lanyard,
- the longe with stoppers.
The latter guarantees an excellent grip for a horse that usually pulls on the lanyard. In addition to all these horse lanyards, there are also ethological working lanyards. These are ideal for working on foot while riding.
