Tips for removing verdigris
Removing with ammonia
Ammonia is the ideal product for removing verdigris from bronze or copper. Here’s how to proceed:
- Put on gloves and mix a little ammonia with water.
- Use a sponge and brush to scrub and clean the copper.
- Rinse the object with soap and water and dry well to finish.
This tip is certainly one of the best for cleaning verdigris-stained copper objects.
Removing with clay stone
To remove verdigris stains from metal, stainless steel, wood and walls, the best tip is to use clay stone.
Clay stone, also known as silver stone or white stone, is a super natural cleaner. The best way to use it is in paste form:
- Soak a sponge in water and take a little clay stone paste.
- Rub the copper, bronze or brass surface in circular motions.
- Rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth.
Removing with methylated spirits
Methylated spirits, also known as methylated spirits, are another product you can use to clean verdigris.
Here’s how it works:
- Soak a cloth in methylated spirits and start cleaning the copper.
- Rub vigorously to remove all stains.
- Rinse with soapy water and dry with a soft, dry cloth.
Wear gloves to protect your hands when cleaning.
Removing with baking soda
For cleaning verdigris from bronze or copper, using baking soda is another trick that works. Here’s how to do it:
- Line the bottom of a basin with aluminum foil.
- Bring 3 liters of boiling water to the boil in a large saucepan.
- Add 1 1/2 cups baking soda to the water and leave to cool for a few minutes.
- Pour the solution into the basin and place the stained object on top.

Remove with vinegar and coarse salt

- Boil 2 cups of white vinegar and dissolve a handful of coarse salt.
- Allow the mixture to cool and rub the verdigris stains with a cloth and brush.
- Rinse thoroughly with water and a little soap to finish.
Be careful with gilded bronze: this vinegar-based recipe could damage this type of surface.
Remove with lemon juice and salt
Similar to the previous tip, here’s another recipe using lemon juice and salt to remove verdigris. For bronze, copper and metals in general, lemon juice and salt can make a great greenscale remover, and here’s how:
You can do either of the following:
- Use a cloth and lemon juice to scrub stains.
- Use a lemon wedge to rub the verdigris directly off.
Finish the cleaning by rinsing with soapy water. Repeat as necessary to remove stubborn stains deeply embedded in the metal.
Removing with soda crystals
To remove verdigris naturally, you can also use soda crystals. Here’s how:
- Boil 2 liters of water in a saucepan and add 2 tablespoons of coarse salt.
- Then add 3 tablespoons of soda crystals and stir well to dissolve.
- Leave to cool for a few minutes, then immerse the stained object for a few minutes.
Remove with ketchup
Less well-known, here’s another trick that can work to remove verdigris. Here’s how to do it:
- Spread a layer of ketchup on the metal surface and leave for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Moisten a sponge or cloth and rub the metal.
- Rinse the metal object thoroughly with soapy water and dry.
Removing verdigris from copper pipes
Copper pipes in good condition and indoors are not usually affected by the verdigris phenomenon, but it can happen. If this is the case and the pipe is not damaged, a plumber should be called in. If you notice greenish-gray on the outside of your copper pipes, you can use one of the tips explained above.

It’s not uncommon for tombstones or funeral plaques to be affected by verdigris. This is seen as greenish stains forming on the surface of the stones. To clean these objects naturally, you can use a mixture of warm water and liquid black soap to remove the verdigris. If the greenish stains are more stubborn, then use a cloth or sponge dampened with clay stone, then wipe with a damp cloth to finish.
