Why opt for a natural fragrance diffuser?
As we all know, diffusers, scented candles, sprays and other industrial perfumes sold on the market are full of chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can be a real health hazard. This type of product represents a real source of domestic pollution worldwide, due to the numerous air pollutants and volatile substances that emanate from them, despite a more or less pleasant scent.
This is particularly the case when using electric diffusers, which diffuse artificial fragrances and thus release phthalates and formaldehyde into the air. The same applies to incense and candles, which also release harmful substances such as acrolein, as well as fine particles. Sources of danger not only for humans, but also for pets.
Homemade fragrance diffusers are a very interesting alternative for pleasant, long-lasting home fragrancing. This is all the more the case as the use of essential oils not only diffuses a good scent, but can also impact the mood of nearby individuals, depending on the virtues of each.
What’s more, the cost of a homemade fragrance diffuser is much lower than the models on the market. All the more reason to change your habits.
In short, to diffuse a thousand and one fragrances at home without impregnating your bronchial tubes with substances that will do you anything but good, let’s move straight on to the DIY option with the very simple manufacture of a homemade perfume diffuser.
How do you make a home perfume diffuser?
There’s nothing complicated about making a perfume diffuser at home. However, the essential oils contained in this type of product should not be used lightly.
Essential oils contain active substances that are not suitable for everyone, especially babies, young children and pregnant women.
In all cases, it’s important to respect the dosage, and to choose only essential oils compatible with ambient diffusion for this type of system with a high quality fragrance.
That said, here’s how to make an essential oil fragrance diffuser for different rooms (bathroom, living room, kitchen, toilet…).
DIY capillary diffuser
Materials:
- Hot water
- Ethanol or 70° alcohol
- Essential oils of your choice
- Empty bottle (depending on your taste in decoration)
- Bamboo skewers
Method:
- Start by pouring 60 ml of hot water into the solution bottle.
- Add 60 ml alcohol directly to the water.
- Add 20 drops of essential oil and mix well.
Then simply cut the pointed end of the bamboo skewers to even out the 2 sides, and place them in the bottle. After an hour, turn the capillaries upside down and enjoy your homemade diffuser.
As the days go by, you can turn the bamboo capillaries upside down and lightly shake the bottle to enjoy a divine fragrance in your home once again.
Perfume diffuser with vegetable oil
A second option is to create a blend of vegetable oil and essential oil in a proportion of 30% EO and 70% vegetable oil.
For this preparation, almond oil or safflower oil can be used as a base. However, it is essential to avoid mineral oils, such as kerosene oil, which are produced by the petrochemical industry and are therefore harmful to health.
Simply mix the two elements in a bottle, place the capillaries in it as explained above and enjoy the pleasant scents that emanate.
Good to know: organic Frankincense essential oil is ideal for this DIY, allowing you to enjoy its relaxing virtues and wonderful spicy fragrance.
Combination fragrance diffuser
For this DIY, you’ll need a mixture identical to the one above, i.e. 30% essential oil to 70% vegetable oil, with the addition of 3 teaspoons of 70° alcohol.
Once again, the preparation should be placed in a glass or ceramic bottle, accompanied by bamboo capillaries.
As a reminder, the role of bamboo capillaries (or any other plant fiber, for that matter) is to draw the liquid upwards, allowing the fragrance to diffuse into the ambient air.
Note: if you find that the scent of essential oils is fading too much, you can add a few drops to the bottle about once a week. This will compensate for evaporation and maintain the diffuser’s effectiveness over time, for better results.
Which essential oils to choose for your fragrance diffuser?
Many essential oils can be used to scent the air inside a room. What’s more, each essential oil has its own particular virtues that can be enjoyed through diffusion. Here are just a few examples:
- For a positive mood and to avoid life’s blues: Lavender, Orange, Jasmine, Cedar and Mint essential oils.
- To purify the air: Thyme, Lemon or Lemongrass essential oils.
- To relax and relieve tension: Lavender or Eucalyptus essential oils.
- To soothe or diffuse in a baby’s room: Mandarin Tangerine essential oils (one of the only EO suitable for diffusion to toddlers).
