Mice in your home? Get rid of them with natural tricks.
When mice invade your home, it’s a source of trouble and stress. Instead of immediately thinking of toxic chemicals or solutions that don’t always work, try natural tricks that can be very effective in driving mice out of your home. Here are some tips on how to get rid of mice in your home quickly.
Why mice in your home?
Mice are attracted to a variety of things, but first and foremost they’re looking for quick and easy access to food. All food scraps attract these little pests, from crumbs to leaky garbage cans, and they’re also attracted to water because, like humans, water is essential to their survival.
Water spots and water droplets can therefore attract them. In autumn and winter, mice also like to rest, so they often look for places to settle down with their families. If there’s a place in the house that’s not too busy, they’ll be sure to hide there!
Cracks and holes in the walls also give them easy access to the house. So you need to keep an eye on these things too, to prevent their intrusion.
If your home is in the countryside, near forests or fields, they are more to be feared than in cities, although cities can also be infested with rats. However, mice are more common in rural areas.
Easy tips for keeping mice out of your home
Here are a few tips to help you get rid of mice quickly:
Take out your rubbish every day
It sounds logical, but it’s vital not to pile up rubbish in your home. Mice constantly need to eat, so they’re on the lookout for every last gram of food, making your trash can a perfect target for them!
If the garbage cans are far from your home, they’ll move away too!
Ultrasound
Mice have more highly-developed senses than we do, including smell and hearing. Ultrasonic devices disrupt their hearing, forcing them to leave. Ready-made systems are available, or you can emit ultrasound from your telephone or loudspeaker.
Fill cracks and holes
Mice can get into your home if there are cracks or holes. So make sure you seal them up to keep them out.
As a temporary solution, use iron filings or abrasive sponges to fill in the holes first.
The cat = Effective solution
To deter mice from your home, having a cat is the best solution. A cat won’t necessarily chase them away, but the presence of a cat in your home can deter them. The cat’s scent will make mice avoid your home.
Essential oils against mice
Essential oils are also natural mouse repellents. Since mice have a keen sense of smell, smelling certain essential oils will repel them. Here are some recommended essential oils:
Peppermint
The strong scent of peppermint repels mice. Use cotton balls soaked in peppermint essential oil . Place them in areas where you’ve spotted mice. Three drops per cotton ball are all you need.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus essential oil has a powerful odor that is unpleasant to mice. Put drops of eucalyptus in hot water and spray over infested areas.
Lemon and pepper
This mixture of lemon and pepper deters mice. Put half a lemon in front of places where mice might go; when the lemon gets moldy, put pepper on it. This mixture will scare them away – they hate it!
Create your own repellent bags – it’s easy and inexpensive!
