Removing rust stains from toilet bowls

It’s not unusual for rust stains to appear on the bottom of the toilet bowl, even if you’re a keen cleaner. Here are a few tips to help you get rid of those rust stains.

1. Remove rust with baking soda

Don’t panic if you find traces of ferrous water or rust on the bottom of your toilet bowl. You can remove these stains with baking soda:

  • First of all, close the water inlet. Then remove as much water as possible from the toilet bowl.
  • Next, sprinkle baking soda over the rust stains.
  • Then, using a toilet brush or dry cloth, scrub the inside of the bowl and over the rust stains.
  • Add a little lemon juice for a pleasant scent.

2. Remove rust with white vinegar

Another trick that will work for rust stains is white vinegar. Here’s how to do it.

  • Pour in 2 cups of hot white vinegar and leave for several hours or, better still, overnight.
  • The next day, scrub the sides and bottom of the bowl with a brush, then flush.

3. Remove rust with lemon juice

Another trick, a little like white vinegar, is to use lemon juice in the same way. Lemon is highly effective against rust stains.

  • Pour 2 cups of lemon juice into the toilet and leave overnight.
  • The next day, scrub with a brush and flush.

You can also mix one part lemon juice with one part white vinegar, for even greater effectiveness.

4. Remove rust with Borax

Borax is not baking soda, and should not be confused with it. Borax is useful for removing rust from toilets.

  • Mix 3 tablespoons of borax with the juice of 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and form a paste.
  • Apply the paste to the sides of the bowl and scrub with a brush or old sponge.

5. Remove rust with a mixture of lime and salt

Very effective but also very abrasive for your toilet enamel, this lemon and salt mixture can nevertheless be very effective against rust stains in the toilet bowl. This trick is best used on heavily soiled toilets.

  • First, turn off the water. Next, empty the toilet bowl, then dry.
  • Then pour lime juice over the bottom and sides of the bowl.
  • Sprinkle with salt and leave for 30 minutes.
  • Scrub gently with a brush or sponge, then rinse well.

6. Remove rust with Coca Cola

The final trick to remove all traces of rust is to use Coca Cola. Here’s how to do it:

  • Empty the water from the bowl and pour in the contents of a bottle of Coca-Cola.
  • Leave for several hours, scrub with a brush and flush.
